Percussionaire’s revolutionary percussive ventilation technology has stood alone for half a century as the standard in prenatal and neonatal respiratory care. At Karten Design, we worked to bring the usability and design language into line with the expectations of modern health care equipment and interfaces.
In-depth interviews with practicing physicians led to several areas where we could improve the controls and display of information while working with the client to streamline aesthetics and branding. The addition of a digital display greatly enhanced usability and made the machines a bit less intimidating.
ADVANCED ENERGY THYRO-PX - 2015
Industrial Power Controller. Advanced Energy purchased the power control business from venerable German industrial giant AEG and wanted a facelift for their Thyro-PX line.
In what became an exercise in constraint management, a fresh look and improved serviceability were achieved while carrying over 90% of the existing parts.
SONY SXRD 4K DIGITAL CINEMA - 2005
World's First 4K Digital Projector.
Integrated data storage, control, cooling and security system for the Sony SXRD SRX-T105 Ultra-High Resolution Projector, built to FIPS 140 level security standards.
100 prototype units custom-built in California were placed in theatres and universities around the country, marking the first commercially available system with 4096x2160 pixels.
Prototype for Sony's CineAlta 4K Digital Cinema Systems.
BELKIN TRUSS CASE - 2014
A.k.a. the Belkin Outrigger, a.k.a. the Belkin Air Protect Grip Extreme. My suggestion, Sim-Bionic Titan, did not make it through licensing. Full protection with a svelte profile and opportunities for unique color combinations between the internal and external materials.
Co-molded smartphone case with a shock-absorbing translucent TPU skin and glass-fiber reinforced nylon skeleton to resist the iPhone 5’s tendency to bend under stress. Much development and vendor cooperation was needed to achieve frame rigidity and the complex double-shot molding.
SONY MINI SYSTEM - 2002
Truly a bridge between eras in music with feet in both the physical and digital worlds. It holds 60 discs (!) yet will broadcast MP3s from your computer (!) and it was the last Sony shelf system with a cassette deck. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth weren't yet widely adopted so in went a reliable 2.4GHz system we dubbed W.A.T. which may have been a mistake as it was confused with watts of power.
This was the first project I led from start to finish but maybe the last I'll ever style after an anime robot; it earned me the nickname Gundam amongst my Tokyo colleagues and a spot in a New York Times article about gender roles in product design. The curvier model was to be the more refined successor but unfortunately only made it to working prototype stage.
STARKEY HEARING AID - 2016
Concept development for a new generation of Starkey Behind the Ear (BTE) hearing aids. The client wanted precious jewelry where there was once a medical device.
A fun initial exploration of aesthetics ranging from postmodern to speed forms led to intense studies of component packaging and new touch surface interfaces.
NYKO POWER BOOSTER - 2015
An interesting challenge to create a slim, elegant case and detachable power pack without the usual telltale visible tabs and grooves required of snapping and sliding parts.
One strategy was to hide the release button in plain sight as the camera surround. The beveled edges, tighter corner radii and fun iconography set it apart from other more bulbous battery cases.
NYKO PS4 CONTROLLER - 2015
Nyko's priority was to keep the familiar and recognizable feel of the existing PlayStation equipment while bringing a more dynamic personality and creating opportunities for customization.
Many forms were modeled and tested in foam and 3D prints. A style unique to Nyko was developed while providing an interface with their own charging dock system.

SONY CAR AUDIO FOR FORD - 2004
OEM Special Edition Audio System for Ford. Working with Visteon, we developed a general audio package for use across the entire Ford lineup of cars in the US and Europe.
Through meetings with Ford and Visteon designers, we created hardware and interface for several concepts to be used in everything from the F-150 truck to the European Mondeo.
